Celebration of Our Nation

Yesterday was the third grade "Celebration of Our Nation", the culmination of a year-long interdisciplinary unit of the United States. The kids put a lot of time and effort into this, both at school and at home. Each child was assigned a state -- Norman's was Oregon -- and all 50 states were represented by at least one student.

The events ran all morning, culminating in the exhibition of their projects. First up was a Music Program. It started with the entire third grade lined up in the aisles singing "Fifty Nifty United States" (yes, Norman can sing the states in alphabetical order). Each child waved as the name of "their" state was sung, which was a neat visual. Norman's class was the lead in two songs.

He played one of the Orff instruments on the American folk song "Deaf Woman's Courtship":

He was part of the volcano in the Hawaiian song "Aia o Pele I Hawaii" (he's front and center in this picture):

Then we wandered around the building, checking out Norman's Take-Apart Project and Portfolio in the Art Studio, his Multi-media Oregon Project in the Computer Lab, his Volcano in the Science Lab, and his Class-created Folktale Movie in the Commons area... Alas, most of this was a blur to me since I'd worked the night before and was operating on no sleep. We chatted with other parents over lemonade and finally apple pie (breakfast!), then wandered around the gym checking out displays. In addition to a landmark project, the children were dressed as a historical figure from their state and answered questions about themselves.

Here are a couple of pictures of Norman's state display from the exhibition in the Gym. He chose Fort Astoria as his landmark and Chief Joseph as his historical figure, and he also had some written materials about his state that he'd created. I could not coax a smile out of him, as he was keeping in character as Chief Joseph.

I plan to post more about the creation of his historical figure costume and landmark project (supervised by Mommy and Daddy respectively), hopefully in the next couple of days.
