USS Yorktown

Last year Simon and Norman took a boy's trip to the USS Yorktown. This year Boo was old enough to go too, so she and I joined them (there were other members of her Girl Scout troop there as well, since it's affiliated with Norman's Cub Scout pack). The schedule of activities was similar to last year, except for a trip to the SC Aquarium in place of the Hunley. It was a blast!

It was Boo's turn to bring her class mascot Mr. Rockin' Ribbit (remember him?) home for the weekend, so he joined us on our trip.

The sleeping arrangements for the girls were much comfier than those for the boys.

We spent a lot of time just wandering around and exploring the ship.

Briggses outside the brig:

That's a big flag!

We visited the SC Aquarium for a few hours on Saturday morning.

They have a really nice touch tank,

and also lots of big sharks.

On Saturday afternoon we toured the USS Clamagore, a submarine that is berthed alongside the Yorktown. It must have been very crowded with a full crew.

Probably the coolest part of all, was watching the dolphins who hunt for fish near the ship in the late afternoon. They were mesmerizing. They also moved pretty fast and only surfaced briefly, so it was hard to take pictures.

It was a tiring weekend, but a very satisfying one as well.
