Rock Hunting - trip post 4

Norman and Lea-Frances like collecting rocks and often bring home what they call "crystals". Months ago we had a conversation about how Grand-Pere used to go rock hunting in Maine many years ago, and they have been eager to have him take them out ever since. Grand-Pere had something removed from the bottom of his foot recently (biopsy came back "wart") and can't walk much right now -- you may have noticed he's wearing a slipper in the lake photos. We decided to try the Oxford county mines on a future trip, and head to a quarry in Topsham this time. Well, Topsham has grown a lot in the past 20 years. We didn't find the quarry, but we did find a new housing development with street names like Feldspar Circle ... and a lot being cleared for a new house with BIG piles of rocks (and orange blasting cord).

Grand-Pere stayed on the fringe, but still managed to find a few interesting rocks.

Gramie Margie had armed the kids with buckets, a rock hammer, safety goggles, and a visor, so they ran amok chipping away at bits of rock. It was mainly granite, with bits of quartz and mica (no surprise, given where we were).

Not quite the trip the adults planned, but the kids thought it was great!
