Beach Trip 2009

We're back from our Fourth-Annual Memorial Day Weekend in Wilmington.

Friday we set up camp at the KOA and ate our traditional dinner at Brooklyn Pizza just down the road. It was a late night, but not intentionally. Having taken a nap on our drive to the beach, Boo managed to fight the Sandman until 10:00.

Saturday morning we visited the Cape Fear Museum for the first time. They had a nifty exhibit called ToyTime, with "giant wooden folk toys that run on nothing more than good old-fashion laws of physics".

The kids also liked climbing through the model of the beaver lodge.

After a picnic lunch, we headed over to the Children's Museum. It was our fourth visit here, and the kids gravitated to their favorite activities.

Climbing the spider web outside.

Shooting the cannon on the pirate ship.

Sending food up and down on the conveyor between the store and the diner.

We got back to the campground early enough for a quick dip in the pool before dinner.

After dinner Norman and Lea-Frances helped toast marshmallows for s'mores. Mmmm, sticky marshmallow goodness.

Sunday was perfect beach weather, so we headed to Wrightsville Beach. The kids had fun in the surf, and also took turns burying each other in the sand. [Note to self: Do not stand with your back to your husband when you're wearing a bathing suit and he's holding a camera.]

We ate our requisite sandy sandwiches at the beach, then packed up and headed back to the campsite. The kids ran around like banshees for the rest of the afternoon, hanging out on the playground and making new friends. We toasted marshmallows for s'mores after dinner again. Mmmm, more sticky marshmallow goodness, especially since Boo decided that roasted marshmallows were pretty good to eat on their own too.

The kids played with their new friends a bit longer, eventually participating in a game of wiffle ball at the campsite across the "street". The pitching Dad nicknamed Norman "Slugger" and Boo "Lightning Arm", which they're still gloating about.

Monday morning we ate a leisurely waffle breakfast before packing up the camper. The kids took another dip in the pool while Simon unhooked Lucy and hitched her up. He washed Lucy at the super-sized carwash next to the campground before he hit the road and headed home.

I left out most of the misery of late bedtimes and early mornings getting into the groove of sleeping in Lucy, as well as Rover needing two jump starts, and barely hobbling home with an alternator problem. It was an adventure as always, fortunately one full of good moments and good memories.
