"How I Tell It"

Simon took the kids to the Herald Sun building around the corner this afternoon to satisfy Norman's Tiger Cub requirement 4G: "Visit a television station, radio station, or newspaper office. Find out how people there communicate to others." This was the final requirement we needed to complete for his badge!

They tried visiting last week, but learned that they need to schedule a visit in advance to take a tour. It was worth the wait, as they visited all the departments and learned the role they each play in putting out a newspaper -- reporters, layout, printing, distribution, advertising... They also saw first-hand how newspapers are dying, with only about a third of the cubicles currently occupied. Fairly eerie.

It was a nice comparison to our visit to the print shop at Franklin Court when we were in Philadelphia. There we learned how printing presses were used to spread the word in colonial days. No computers in use then:
